7a Spofford Village

There are two very nice 1800s close-up maps of Spofford Village, which was the largest hub of activity in Chesterfield in the early days. The reliable water power provided by the lake meant factories and jobs.

1858

The 1858 detail map of Chesterfield Factory (Spofford) shows a hotel, two stores, a church, and many mills and shops.

The gate house at the outlet of the lake, indicating a dam had been constructed. Several mill ponds are also shown.

This map comes from the large county wall map.

Unfortunately, there is no 1877 village detail map of Spofford Village, though when you look at the town map

1892

There is no 1877 closeup map of Spofford Village, but the 1892 atlas has one.

The layout is almost identical to the 1858 map, so it is easy to compare sites.
