The reliable water power provided by the lake meant factories and jobs.<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.vhist.com\/chs\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/2\/files\/chf30s_villages_misc\/41_chf-1858-spof.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox[813]\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"ngg-singlepic ngg-left alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/www.vhist.com\/chs\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/2\/files\/chf30s_villages_misc\/41_chf-1858-spof.jpg\" alt=\"41_chf-1858-spof\" width=\"778\" height=\"642\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h2>1858<\/h2>\n<p>The 1858 detail map of Chesterfield Factory (Spofford) shows a hotel, two   stores, a church, and many mills and shops.<\/p>\n<p>The gate house at the   outlet of the lake, indicating a dam had been constructed.
