1729 2 Mile Addition

Fourteen years after the 1715 request, ancient Sunderland was expanded to the west. The legislature allowed a “2 Mile Addition” to ancient Sunderland, thus making a very large town.

sun_1729_2mileadditionwebTheir is no known original map of the 2 Mile Addition, so this map has been prepared. The un-shaded area to the west is ancient Sunderland (Swampfield). The addition was two miles wide and nine miles north to south. It extended to the eastern boundary of today’s Town of Leverett, and thus created that modern boundary line.

So as of 1729, Sunderland reached it maximum size, encompassing all of modern Sunderland & Leverett, most of Montague, and part of the Town of Wendell.
